Meet at Kanata Village in Brantford and shuttle upstream on the Grand River to launch the 12-man Voyageur canoes. Our canoes are four feet wide…so stable you can stand up in them! This is a 2-hour group paddle through a series of gravel bars, gentle rapids and long pools. and have our “Tripper Lunch” on the ruins of an old bridge. It is hard to believe how secluded this section is…you can’t fathom there is a city nearby, because your eyes don’t see it. The end of this trip flows into a huge oxbow, which was the most northern navigable point during the 1800’s for steamship passage to Lake Erie. About 1 hour into the oxbow you will be getting out below the famous 17th century Iroquois village, called Kanata. From there we do a walk to explore the ruins of an old mill, the navigation locks for barges and the site ruins of Brantford’s first power plant. Then hike along the old canal to the 17th century Iroquois Village for a tour and interactive teaching session. Catered barbeques are available. Also group overnights in the Longhouse can be arranged.
