A guided Cayuga trips is one of the best experiences we offer. Launching from behind our century old downtown Paris shop, you’ll paddle through the swifts past this small town’s historic river side architecture. Once outside of Paris, you leave civilization behind as nature offer’s plenty to see and do on this trip.
This run is a relaxing paddle with a little spice. The famous “Bloop” awaits the adventurous paddlers looking for excitement and splash and perhaps a bit more. To the left of a small island is a gentle swift through which you can drift on past the “Bloop.” Yet to the right, a ledge on the river’s bottom creates a standing two foot wave that is sure to get your heart pounding. The choice of which side to take is yours.
Once outside of Paris and past the Bloop, the water is calm and relaxing. Since there aren’t many rocks to watch for, you’ll be able to see the Great Blue Herons, Ospreys, Mallard ducks, Painted turtles and perhaps some deer on the riverbank.
In addition to the enjoyment of the wildlife and the escape from a busy world, your guide will introduce you to remnants of a
world long past. If you’re brave enough, you can explore the remains of a 150 year old gypsum mine, a key to Paris’ history. You can walk the Black Walnut trail that meanders along the high banks of the Carolinian forest bordering the Grand and enjoy the view from the lookout point. Your guide can tell you the stories of the lost Neutral tribe that frequented those same paths 200 years ago and the first European settlers to the area. You can even see the remains of a 150 year old abandoned “Corduroy” Road just outside of Brantford.
On a hot summer day you can take a detour and step into one of the coldest streams in Ontario that is fed by deep underwater channels, an icy chill even on the hottest day in August. If the water is high enough, your guide can take you through smaller side channels of the river, bringing you much closer to nature. You just might spot a beaver or a muskrat before you float past Whiteman’s Creek and what remains of its old crumbled dam.
The trip ends in Brant Park Conservation Area in Brantford. We can set up camping arrangements for you if you would like to add an overnight stay to your adventure. Otherwise, you’ll be on your way home feeling glad that you finally got out and had the adventure you’ve been waiting for and that it was well worth it.
