Pearce through the rolling water of Long Point in professional grade sea kayaks. The inner bay of Long Point is protected by the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve that runs along the peninsula. This stretch creates a paddler’s paradise: a huge marsh coastline populated with large fishing birds, large lake fish, turtles and all sorts of other natural wonders. It is an excellent excursion for novice paddlers, but will also satisfy the advanced navigators. Learn to use a marine map, GPS devices, compasses, read the winds and the water as we navigate along the peninsula and prepare for the crossing of the mouth of the inner bay in the second day.
The first day will be an instructional lesson where paddlers will learn paddling techniques, J-leans to manage and cut across swells and waves, wet water exits and re-entries, kayak-rescuing and using some tools such as maps, GPS, kayak pumps, paddle floats in a protected, flat water area along the western side of the Point. We will camp at Long Point Provincial Park for the night and rest for the open-lake paddle. The following day we will paddle from Long Point Provincial Park to Pottahawk Island, where we will stop for lunch and light a campfire on the remote pea gravel beach facing the open lake. From there we will make the final crossing across the mouth of the Bay. Once we have reached shore we will evaluate our condition and plot our course to Port Rowan, Booth’s Harbour or Turkey Point.
