Cayuga Run

Launching from behind our century-old downtown Paris shop, you’ll paddle through the swift current, past this small town’s historic riverside architecture. Once outside of Paris, you leave civilization behind as nature offers plenty to see and do on this trip.

This run is mostly a relaxing paddle, with dashes of small rapids to keep your interest piqued. The famous “Bloop” awaits the adventurous paddlers looking for excitement and a splash: a ledge on the river’s bottom creates a standing two foot wave that is sure to get your heart pounding. Those looking to stay dry can opt to steer to the left and drift past it.

Past the Bloop, the water is calm and relaxing. You’ll be able to see the Great Blue Herons, Ospreys, Mallard ducks, Painted turtles and perhaps even deer on the riverbank.

Your guide will introduce you to remnants of a world long past. Explore the remains of a 150 year-old gypsum mine, a key to Paris’ history. Walk the trail that meanders along the high banks of the Carolinian forest bordering the Grand and enjoy the view from the lookout point. Your guide can tell you the stories of the tribe that frequented those same paths 200 years ago and the first European settlers to the area.

In this section of the river, you can take time to step into one of the many springs feeding into the river to experience relief from the summer’s heat. If you approach quietly, you just might spot a beaver or a muskrat as you float past Whiteman’s Creek and what remains of its old crumbled dam.

The trip ends in Brant Park Conservation Area in Brantford. We can set up camping arrangements for you if you would like to add an overnight stay to your adventure. Otherwise, you’ll be on your way home with some great memories to last you till your next trip.

Notice: BRANT PARK Entrance Fee of $5/person not included.
