Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work? How do I get back to my car?

When you come to paddle with grand Experiences, you will park down river. Our shuttle will come and drive you up river to the starting point. You will then paddle back down river, back to your car. The reason for this is so that you can move at your own pace down the river. You don’t have to rush to get back to the shuttle nor do you have to wait for stragglers. When you’re finished your trip, you are simply back at your car and ready to go!

Do we need to make a reservation?

It is better to reserve ahead to avoid disappointment. We have scheduled shuttle times and our shuttles do get fully booked on some days. We do accept people without reservations as long as we can accommodate them.

How many people fit in a canoe?  depends how close you are  - Just Kidding ;-)

There are 2 seats in a canoe.  However Grand Experiences uses larger capacity canoe.  Our main model is a 16' 9" Prospector style which can carry a 3rd adult or 2 kids along with the main 2 paddlers.

Are Tandem kayaks available?

The majority of our fleet are solo kayaks however we do have some tandem kayaks available. Tandem kayaks are great for couples or adults with a small child in the front.

How deep is the river?

The average depth of the Grand River depending on which run you choose to do.  Cambridge to Brantford averages about 3 feet. There are also some sections that are deep enough to stop for a swim. The water becomes deeper further downstream.

Can a novice paddler paddle on the Grand River?

Yes, the Grand is a great learning place for Novice paddlers.  Grand Experiences provides Instructional Trips and Guided Trips if you don't have a more experienced paddler with you.

Are there any rapids?

Not much on the Grand  There are some swifts which are less than Class i rapids.  The Oneida & Seneca run have a brief Class 1 and the Cayuga Run has a fun Class ii which can be avoided as the river forks at this location.  During Spring run-off (April) or periods of excessive rain when flows are higher If you feel uneasy about going by yourself, ask us about our guided trips!  Our guides will help you with paddling techniques & teach you how to read the river.  For those looking for rapids we do Instructional Whitewater Trips on the Nith River in the early Spring (late March to early May)

How old do kids need to be to come on a canoe trip?

We supply lifejackets for infants and toddlers however the child must be walking age to get in a canoe. For a child to go in their own kayak we recommend they are at least 9 years of age with some paddling experience.

What time do we have to be there?

We would like to have you at the end point 15-30 minutes before the scheduled shuttle departure. This is so that we have enough time to get you signed in and parked in the proper parking lot. We will wait 15 minutes for late arrivers.

What is the cancellation policy?

We have a 48 hour cancellation policy. If you can’t make it or if you will not need the number of boats reserved you must give us a call 48 hours before your scheduled trip to avoid a penalty. If you have scheduled an overnight package at a Bed and Breakfast we will need to charge for the overnight accommodations as they are very strict with their cancellation policy.

What happens in inclement weather? We use a radar to track the weather systems in our area. If you are hesitant about the weather, please give us a call the morning of your trip and we will let you know what we think. If it is a light rain, we would still encourage you to go out however if it was a heavy rain or thunderstorm we would postpone your trip to after it ends or reschedule it.
